The FF Plus has lodged a complaint about water pollution with the Gauteng Department of Environmental Affairs and Rural Development against the Mogale City Local Municipality (Krugersdorp, Tarlton, Magaliesburg and Muldersdrift) for to the dumping of sewage in three rivers as well as the pollution of groundwater.
Sewage from the Percy Steward sewage plant is dumped in the Bloubankspruit, Blougatspruit and Crocodile River and as a result, farmers cannot use water from their boreholes or irrigate using water from the rivers and holiday resorts and guest houses' visitor numbers are dwindling because guests cannot bear the stench.
The polluted Bloubankspruit, which flows through the World Heritage area to the Cradle of Humankind, where various hominid fossils are found in the region of Sterkfontein, Swartkrans and Kromdraai, has already been brought to the attention of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco).
The FF Plus sent numerous requests to the Mogaly City Local Municipality to put an end to the pollution caused by the sewage plant, but to no avail. A tender for the supply of chlorinating services to the Percy Steward sewage plant that was advertised last year has still not been awarded.
Holiday resorts outside Krugersdorp and Magaliesburg, which were already severely financially impacted by the Covid-19 lockdown, are now being restricted even further because they are forced to turn away guests or to accommodate fewer people. The tourism industry, which brings large numbers of tourists to the Cradle of Humankind due to its many unique attractions, simply cannot afford to lose any more money due to Mogale City's mismanagement.
Unfortunately, Mogale City's mismanagement is much more extensive than sewage pollution and encompasses a total collapse of infrastructure and service delivery.
The FF Plus will not hesitate to expose municipal mismanagement and also force authorities to step in for the benefit of all taxpayers.
