The Ekurhuleni coalition government, of which the FF Plus is an active partner, has sent an official letter to the chief executive officer of Eskom, André de Ruyter, to express its objection to Eskom's proposed tariff hike of 20,5%.
The increase is unreasonable due to various factors, like the current high unemployment rate.
The proposed increase is also far above the current inflation rate of 5,5%, which is an indication that residents simply cannot afford it.
The devastating aftermath of the 2020/2021 lockdowns is far from over. Numerous business enterprises are under financial pressure, some have been forced to downscale and others have had to close their doors.
Eskom must reconsider the increase. The public is already being pushed to its limit by the struggling economy and we have reached the point where ordinary salary drawers simply cannot afford such exorbitant increases.
