On Friday, the FF Plus celebrated the opening of the restored World War Memorial in Springs with various cultural organisations, businesspeople and the community.
Some of the organisations involved include the Federasie van Afrikaanse Kultuurvereniginge (FAK) and the Voortrekkers; others who attended include businesspeople and local residents.
The opening event was the culmination of a clean-up action launched about a year ago when a large group of volunteers started clearing the area around the neglected War Memorial and decided to restore it to its former glory.
This World War Memorial was erected in 1965 in honour of the Springs residents who perished during the First and Second World War.
The names of the fallen soldiers are engraved on a marble slab.
The presence of a number of youths during the clean-up and opening is praiseworthy, and demonstrates the youth’s willingness to conserve their heritage with pride.
The restoration of this monument proves that politicians, cultural organisations, businesspeople and the community can work together for a greater cause.
