FF Plus enquiries about MEDiPOS from Council of Medical Schemes

Yesterday during a meeting of the Portfolio Committee on Health, the FF Plus asked the Council for Medical Schemes (CMS) about the current debacle at MEDiPOS.

MEDiPOS is the medical scheme for the South African Post Office (SAPO).

According to reports, SAPO's unpaid medical aid fund account, amounting to R700 million, remains a big problem for the state institution.

The FF Plus wanted to know why CMS did not act sooner to address this matter, which has serious consequences for MEDiPOS members.

Members who regularly and loyally make their contributions are adversely affected by the debacle.

The FF Plus frequently receives complaints about it from members of the fund.

The party also wanted to know why CMS did not bring the matter to the Portfolio Committee's attention.

Likewise, fraud amounting to R300 million at the public officials' medical aid fund (GEMS) was only brought to a head when members of the Portfolio Committee confronted the regulator about it in 2021.

The FF Plus has, furthermore, requested a comprehensive report on all medical aid funds at risk of collapsing.

The regulator indicated that the Portfolio Committee can request a briefing at any time and that such a report will be submitted to the Portfolio Committee as soon as it has been finalised.

The FF Plus hopes that the MEDiPOS debacle will be resolved as soon as possible so that its members are not left without access to medical care.
