The FF Plus did not support the 2024/25 budget of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro (NMBM) today because of its proposed tariff hikes, particularly those exceeding 5%.
Although the FF Plus understands the need to make annual adjustments to keep up with inflation and operational costs, the financial burden already shouldered by taxpayers must be taken into account as well.
With the NMBM’s unemployment rate approaching 40%, many residents are experiencing financial problems, and the proposed tariff hikes will plunge even more residents into poverty and result in non-payment.
The Metro should focus on increasing its collection rate for services rendered instead of punishing overtaxed residents with exorbitant tariff hikes.
The proposed tariff hikes are as follows:
• Power : 12,7%
• Water : 6%
• Sanitation : 6%
• Refuse removal : 6%
• Property tax : 5%
The FF Plus is committed to being a voice for NMBM residents who loyally pay their utility bills, and ensuring that their financial contributions are used responsibly and equitably.
