FF Plus does not support DA request to write off debt in NMBM

The FF Plus does not agree with the request made by the DA in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro to consider implementing an amnesty period for persons who make use of illegal electricity connections and / or who are guilty of power meter tampering in addition to writing off outstanding debt.

The amount in question amounts to a staggering R200 million. It is a slap in the face of all the residents who diligently pay their accounts on time.

The FF Plus proposes the following: the Metro must take stricter action against guilty parties and invest in a task team that removes illegal connections, perpetrators must be prosecuted and the outstanding debt must be collected and not written off. Otherwise the culture of non-payment will be reinforced.

Seen in the light of the fact that in the first six months of the current financial year, the Metro suffered a financial loss of 16,6 %, compared to the 13,13% of the 2016/17 financial year, it is clear that non-payment is an ever-growing problem and decisive steps must be taken to turn the tendency around.

The FF Plus will ask the city management not to comply with the DA's request, but to rather undertake to address the problem and take appropriate action against criminal behaviour.
