The FF Plus demands that the Minister of Home Affairs, Aaron Motsoaledi, must respond to claims that the controversial advocate Seth Nthai (SC) is playing a prominent role in the Department with the Minister's blessing.
Advocate Nthai, the former MEC for Safety and Security in Limpopo, was readmitted as advocate in June 2019 after he was struck from the roll of practising advocates in 2013. An investigation had uncovered that he was involved in soliciting a bribe of R5 million from an Italian businessman.
After the High Court in Polokwane's controversial ruling in May 2019, Nthai was readmitted to the bar.
Both the Johannesburg Society of Advocates as well as the General Bar Council started proceedings last month to appeal against the readmission of Nthai.
According to Siya Qoza, spokesperson for the Department, the Office of the State Attorney has appointed Nthai to, among other things, represent the Department, with legal liability already amounting to more than R2 billion, in a number of legal disputes and to restructure certain legal matters within the Department itself.
The FF Plus is currently busy with an investigation into the process that the Department followed in appointing Nthai and the party will also pose a comprehensive question about the matter to the Minister in Parliament.
