On Monday afternoon, an FF Plus councillor in the Ekurhuleni Metro Council, Riaan van Zyl, did not think twice before braving ice-cold water to save a woman that disappeared in a flooded underpass in Brakpan.
A hailstorm hit Brakpan on Monday afternoon and flooded the Stoffberg Bridge’s underpass.
A motorist tried to drive through the underpass, but the car disappeared under the water and got stuck between two of the bridge’s pillars.
A woman who witnessed the events jumped out of her car to help the motorist. She, however, ran into trouble herself.
Van Zyl, who had been trying to shield his vehicle against the storm underneath a tree nearby, was informed of the incident per radio and rushed to the scene.
Van Zyl was able to bring the woman to safety.
The fire brigade was able to save the male motorist from his car, but sadly, he passed away at the scene.
The FF Plus requested the Metro to ensure that the necessary preventive measures are in place to prevent similar incidents in the future. This specific underpass frequently floods when it rains a lot.
The FF Plus herewith expresses its deepest condolences to the deceased man’s family.
