The National Council of Provinces (NCOP) decided today that the Mamusa municipality must be dissolved and the FF Plus put forward various conditions for this dissolution.
The conditions include a thorough selection process to ensure that the person who is appointed as the administrator is competent to fulfil the role successfully and that the administrator must frequently submit a progress report to the relevant provincial Legislature.
Up to now, that has not been one of the requirements and the NCOP accepted the recommendation. The FF Plus considers it a breakthrough that will contribute greatly to establishing good management in local government.
The FF Plus also requested that the vacant positions of municipal manager and chief financial officer must be advertised and filled immediately after the administrator was appointed so as to ensure that service delivery and administration can continue.
The NCOP also approved a financial audit of the municipality.
A notice of dissolution will be sent to the municipal council, which means that the council must dissolve within 14 days after receiving the notice.
The FF Plus will keep the pressure on to ensure that a healthier municipal council is appointed and that corrupt officials are called to account.
