(Motion in Western Cape Legislature)
The FF Plus has asked the Western Cape Department of Health and Social Development to launch an awareness and testing campaign for diabetes.
According to the head of the Department, Dr Keith Cloete, diabetes is the second biggest cause of the high mortality rate among people who tested positive for Covid-19.
This emphasises how important it is to not only do extensive pre-testing for Covid-19 among diabetics, but also to test for diabetes in communities where people may not even be aware of the fact that they have the disease and/or know about the risks associated with it.
The FF Plus also requested that the relevant Western Cape ministers must investigate the availability and provision of chronic medication at all state health care facilities in the province and report their findings.
The motion was adopted without any objections.
The FF Plus wants to reiterate that proper testing and the provision of chronic medication are currently of the utmost importance to reduce the number of deaths among Covid-19 patients in the Western Cape.
The party expresses its deepest sympathy to the family and friends of those who have passed away and wishes all those who have tested positive a speedy recovery.
