The FF Plus has sent an official letter to the acting manager, Mrs Mampa, and the administrator, Mr MKF Bisholo, of the Mogalakwena Local Municipality (Mokopane/ Potgietersrus) asking them to urgently provide or replace faulty electricity transformers to farmers in the area.
The party also sent an official letter about the matter to the Limpopo MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (COGHSTA), Mr Baisikopo Makamu.
One of the farmers, Mr Jan Marais, has been struggling to get the Municipality to install a 50 kVA transformer since 2010. The transformer was initially damaged during a storm and it was temporarily replaced with a 25 kVA transformer. After many requests and letters, the transformer has still not been replaced with the correct one.
The 25 kVA transformer of another farmer in the area, Mr Jan van der Lith, was also damaged by bad weather and at present, there is no electricity on his farm. These transformers are indispensable as they power borehole pumps so as to provide water to humans and animals. All Mr Van der Lith's requests and queries in this regard have simply been ignored.
Employees in the electricity services department are apparently using the Municipality's precarious financial position as excuse for why the transformers cannot be repaired or replaced.
The FF Plus demands that the farmers' problems must be addressed at once and the party will keep putting pressure on the Municipality to provide basic services to loyal taxpayers.
The community of Potgietersrus does not deserve to be punished for the Municipality's mismanagement.
