The FF Plus has asked the Gauteng MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Lebogang Maile, to urgently intervene in an illegal land occupation in the Emfuleni Municipality (Evaton, Sebokeng, Vaal Oewer, Vanderbijl Park, Vereeniging).
Approximately 400 illegal structures have been erected on municipal land and squatters now live there in terrible circumstances without any municipal services.
The FF Plus is also concerned about yet another illegal land occupation incident as numerous squatters have settled on seven small holdings in De Deur, Midvaal. Nearby landowners are worried that the informal settlers may increase in number and that the illegal occupation of land could spread to the adjacent privately owned land.
The FF Plus paid a visit to the area and took up the matter with the Midvaal mayoral member for Development and Planning, Mr Motsamal. The civil rights organisation, Afriforum, has also offered its assistance to the affected landowners.
The FF Plus is of the opinion that authorities and courts must be made more accessible to landowners who want to have illegal land occupants removed from their property, particularly because many landowners do not have the funds needed to cover expensive legal costs.
