The FF Plus's branch chairperson in the Dipaliseng Local Municipality, Mr Carel Pienaar, has requested that Balfour and Greylingstad must be added to the list of towns that the Green Scorpions are looking into in Mpumalanga due to severe sewage pollution.
The sewage plants in these towns have not been functioning for three years now. As a result, raw sewage flows into the Suikerbosrand River and this poses a serious health and environmental risk.
On the 30th of September this year, the FF Plus sent an official letter to Mrs Pamela Ntuli (chief director of Environmental Affairs in Mpumalanga) as well as to the Green Scorpions to inform them of various municipalities' blatant disregard for national legislation, which is causing serious pollution problems.
The letter, which demanded that action must be taken, provided specific details about where sewage water is being dumped. GPS coordinates were provided to help the Green Scorpions with their investigation into the situations in the towns of Hazyview, eMalahleni, Standerton and Bethal.
The FF Plus will also ask the Premier of Mpumalanga, Mrs Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane, and the MEC for Environmental Affairs, Mr Vusi Shongwe, to ensure that appropriate action is taken against the municipalities that violate legislation on pollution.
