The FF Plus has asked the Gauteng MEC for Economic Development, Agriculture and Environmental Affairs, Parks Tau, to urgently investigate the deterioration of the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve. The Reserve is situated between Meyerton and Heidelberg.
The relevant provincial department is responsible for the management and upkeep of the reserves and parks under its control.
These reserves and parks provide a vital financial injection to the local economy and the FF Plus will neglect to do its duty if the party does not hold the MEC accountable for the Reserve's deterioration. The party will also insist on access to the relevant financial reports so as to monitor the management process.
In the past, the popular Nature Reserve boasted large numbers of nature lovers who visited it and walked its many hiking trails, viewed the more than 200 different species of birds or observed the large variety of deer species by car.
Now, however, it is dirty, neglected and dilapidated. It also appears that some of the wild deer are being poached.
The FF Plus will put pressure on Tau to address the problem so that visitors can once again, as in the past, visit the Reserve and enjoy nature.
