Emfuleni workers are idle while public toilets rot

The toilet facilities of the licensing offices in Vereeniging are so filthy that no-one dares to use it.

The FF Plus conducted an oversight visit to the licensing offices last week and discovered the shocking state of the toilet facilities.

The public must use these facilities while waiting in queues for hours on end to renew their drivers’ and vehicle licences.

The Emfuleni Local Municipality employs about 120 general workers who are responsible for, among other things, cleaning public toilet facilities, offices, parks, stormwater drains and more.

Many of these workers have been unproductive for years because they do not have the cleaning supplies or equipment needed to do their job.

These workers earn a gross salary of R261 588 with benefits, which include housing, pension and medical aid.

The party had visited the licensing offices two years earlier and had asked the acting Mayoral Committee Member for Public Works, Mako Hassan, to immediately address the decline.

Nothing has improved since.

On Friday, the FF Plus asked both Hassan and the acting director of Public Works, Erni Strydom, to immediately earmark funds for cleaning up the licensing office’s toilet facilities and replacing the broken toilets and basins.

The unhygienic situation cannot be allowed to persist, and poses a health risk to the public.

The FF Plus will continue to put pressure on the Municipality to fulfil its duty towards the public and will pay another visit to the licensing offices soon.

Emfuleni deserves better than the ANC.
