At first glance, the Ekurhuleni Metro’s unqualified audit report issued by the Auditor-General (AG) could create the impression that the Metro is governed quite well.
At closer inspection, though, the report indicates that none of the ANC/EFF government’s service delivery targets were achieved, despite the fact that the report is unqualified.
So, the ANC/EFF government’s boasting about the audit report should be taken with a pinch of salt.
In addition, it should be noted that this report by the AG is merely an unqualified report.
In comparison, clean, unqualified audit reports were received for the previous two years during which a coalition government, with the FF Plus as governing partner, was at the steer of things.
So, the few successes highlighted in the report were the outcome of the turn-around processes implemented by the previous multi-party coalition government.
The AG, furthermore, found that the Ekurhuleni housing company did not achieve any of its targets.
This is problematic in light of the fact that there is a great influx of people into the Metro every year, resulting in more and more squatter camps.
Various departments, such as Water and Sanitation, Electricity, and Waste Management, exceeded their budgets.
The Governance and Economic Development Departments fared the best. These so-called achievements ought to be viewed against the backdrop of poor service delivery and a substantial lack of economic growth in the Metro.
Clearly, the private sector will once again have to step in where the ANC/EFF government fails – both in regard to ensuring economic growth and performing government functions, such as repairing potholes.
The AG’s report clearly shows how service delivery is caught in a downward spiral under the ANC/EFF government.
The FF Plus will always endeavour to establish a metro government that puts residents first, and creates a peaceful environment facilitating job-creating economic growth for families to flourish.
The ANC/EFF government must fall.
