The Ekurhuleni Metro’s traffic infrastructure is dysfunctional, and the FF Plus has requested the Metro and the Department of Roads and Transport to identify the main causes, such as electrical faults and outdated systems.
Several traffic lights in the Metro have been out of order for quite some time. This causes confusion in traffic and increases the risk of accidents.
One such hotspot is Atlas Road where all the traffic lights are sometimes out. Atlas Road is the main route between Boksburg and Kempton Park.
The traffic lights at the exit junction to the N12 West highway are also out of order. The affected streets in Atlas Road are Finch, Park, Merlin, Bass, O’Hare, Geldenhuys and Bonaero Drive.
This puts drivers and pedestrians in serious danger.
The FF Plus proposes that a plan be implemented to use advanced monitoring systems that can immediately detect and rectify problems.
The Metro should also consider procuring smart traffic lights and automatic control systems. Such systems automatically make adjustments based on fluctuations in traffic volume and emergency situations.
This will eliminate the hassle of motorists spending hours in traffic due to malfunctioning traffic lights.
In the meantime, it is vital to implement temporary traffic control at key points until the current problem is resolved.
The FF Plus advocates for safe and efficient traffic infrastructure, and will do everything in its power to compel the ANC/EFF coalition to ensure that the Metro’s traffic systems function properly.
