The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) condemns the conduct of the Speaker of the Ekurhuleni Metro Council, Nthabiseng Tshivhenga, who adjourned last week’s council meeting after refusing to allow a discussion of a report on alleged misconduct and fraud in her Office.
Councillors were clearly unhappy with the decision and strongly objected. Shortly after, the disrupted meeting was adjourned.
The report contains charges of alleged misconduct and fraudulent activities in the Speaker’s Office, which raises serious concerns about the integrity of the Municipality’s leadership.
During the meeting, the Speaker was formally requested to withdraw from the meeting so that the item could be discussed in committee. She simply refused.
Her refusal to have the report discussed is just another black mark behind her name for blatant dereliction of duty and incompetence as speaker.
To date, there has been no communication about when the meeting will proceed or when the report will be discussed.
The Freedom Front Plus demands that the Speaker convene a council meeting within seven days.
Council matters should be addressed in accordance with the Municipal Structures Act, and not the Speaker’s whims.
Ekurhuleni residents deserve a transparent and accountable government. The Speaker’s conduct undermines these principles.
