(Debate on Mayer’s state of the city address)
During the debate on the state of the city address of the Ekurhuleni Metro's Mayor, Mzwandile Masina, the FF Plus accused him of letting the residents of Ekurhuleni down.
The FF Plus referred to various examples to illustrate its point and confronted the Mayor for patting himself on the back while service delivery in general is seriously declining.
One of the most pressing problems is the frequent power outages affecting the Metro. This has nothing to do with load shedding, but everything with the Metro Council's own poor planning and management as well as the lack of maintenance to power infrastructure.
Cable theft and illegal connections only exacerbate the problem and too little is being done to prevent it. Burning issues in this regard must be identified and addressed.
Another issue that infringes on Metro residents' right to human dignity is the Metro Council's extremely poor garbage disposal services. The Department responsible for this was only able to ensure that one of the five dumping sites is in order and can be used.
As a result, the Metro has degenerated into a dirty, smelly and unhealthy place to live.
There are various other problems that are not addressed either. Water leakages are not repaired; potholes endanger road users' lives; the Parks Department is not functioning; critical positions remain vacant; the Farrarmere Gardens title deed debacle, robbing elderly individuals of their property rights, is still not resolved and the promised housing projects do not realise.
The FF Plus will continue to fight for better service delivery for all Metro residents.
