“The minister of Basic Education, Ms. Angie Motshekga, must provide answers regarding the question about rape in a matric paper which deals with a play Tshepang. What was the question about if the department did not expect the learners to describe the rape? Even the playwright, Lara Foot, views the question as unsuitable and even repulsive. It appears as if the authors of the question paper are ignorant and unprofessional,” Dr. Pieter Groenewald, the FF Plus’ parliamentary leader says.
“The minister should explain why the play Tshepang was chosen in the first instance. It is widely accepted that rape is a serious problem in our society, but the issue should be conveyed to learners in a professional and skilful manner or else it could cause damage instead of making people aware of the problem. The minister owes the public an explanation and should not wait to see whether the examination papers indicate that learners were negatively affected by the question,” Groenewald said.
