The FF Plus finds the decrease in certain types of crime in Gauteng encouraging, but wants the Gauteng provincial Police Commissioner, Lt.-Gen. Elias Mawela, to say how he plans to address the increase in car hijackings and transit heists.
The latest crime statistics for the third quarter of 2020 that were released recently indicate that car hijackings increased with 5%, truck hijackings with 52% and transit heists with 107,7% compared to the previous quarter in Gauteng.
The decrease in murder, assault and sexual offences can be ascribed to the Covid-19 lockdown and the restrictions on the sale of alcohol. The FF Plus believes that visible policing also played a part in the decrease in contact crimes.
In addition, the FF Plus is of the opinion that if the police in Gauteng would keep building on positive aspects, like greater visibility, proper training for officers and the availability of vehicles, ammunition and weapons, then the crime figures in the province will continue to drop.
