Afrikaners are not selfish or divisive about the street name changes in Pretoria. Afrikaners want the heritage of all South Africans to be respected by means of displaying both the old and new street names; this will recognise our shared history.
This is the reaction of Mr. Philip van Staden, FF Plus MPL in Gauteng, about yesterday’s Constitutional Court judgement that ruled that Tshwane metro is allowed to remove old street names because Afrikaners are “selfish” and “divisive”.
Van Staden said that, according to the party’s mayoral candidate, Adv. Anton Alberts, the ANC is wasting money that could be utilised much more effectively.
He said the FF Plus is the only opposition party that was against the changing of 25 street names during a Tshwane council meeting on 29 March 2012.
“The Pretoria tax payer already paid R27 million for ANC actions concerning the changing of street names in the city. We can’t afford to spend money on trivialities. Money should rather be used to upgrade the City’s infrastructure.
“The FF Plus is saddened by this ruling and we feel that a door has now been opened to get rid of Afrikaner history,” Van Staden said.
