The DA, EFF and ActionSA deliberately disrupted the Ekurhuleni Metro’s council meeting today, demonstrating a callous disregard for the interests of voters and residents.
Instead of participating responsibly, these parties placed political opportunism before service delivery and good governance.
The absence of the Speaker, Mr John Senona, and the Executive Mayor, Mr Nkosindiphile Xhakaza, did not constitute valid grounds for calling off the meeting.
The Mayoral Committee Member for Finance, Mr Jongizizwe Dlabathi, was present and able to act as Mayor, and in line with established practice, an acting Speaker could have been appointed to proceed with the business of Council.
The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) deliberately remained in attendance, demonstrating that it prioritises residents’ interests and is willing to proceed with the agenda.
The possible suspension of the Municipal Manager, Mr Kagiso Lerutla, may have been tabled to Council as a matter of urgency.
By derailing the meeting, the DA, EFF and ActionSA not only undermined accountability, but also wasted public funds.
Expenses, such as catering costs, had already been incurred for a meeting which did not take place.
Residents should keep this conduct in mind when they cast their votes, as it clearly reflects these parties’ priorities.
The Freedom Front Plus remains committed to responsible governance and putting residents’ interests first.
