Court ruling exposes systematic corruption spanning decades and Mpumalanga government’s recklessness with tax money

The Gauteng High Court’s ruling in favour of the company Grand Valley Estates, owned by conservation activist Fred Daniel, serves as more proof that the Mpumalanga provincial government deals recklessly with taxpayers’ money.

The Court ordered Mpumalanga’s Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA) and the Land Claims Commissioner to pay R306 109 240 plus interest of 11,5%, backdated from November 2024 to Grand Valley Estates.

This ruling is more than just financial compensation and a punishment for Mpumalanga’s taxpayers; it is a verdict on systemic corruption and political conspiracy spanning decades. It exposes a pattern of abuse of power and administrative sabotage that has not only harmed an individual, but also undermined the integrity of public institutions.

The case stems from a long-standing dispute dating back to the late 1990s when Daniel established the Nkomazi Wilderness Reserve, a sustainable game reserve covering 39 000 hectares in the Badplaas area.

The Court found that Daniel’s conservation project was deliberately undermined through unlawful interference, including false land claims and intimidation.

Specific reference was made to a concerted effort by the MTPA, the Land Claims Commissioner and other role-players, including the late former premier David Mabuza and broker Pieter Visagie, to pressure Daniel into selling his land.

The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) wants to point out that this court ruling deals the province a severe financial blow.

Funds that could otherwise have been allocated to essential service delivery such as education, healthcare and infrastructure must now be used to cover the compensation.

To prevent future malpractices, the Freedom Front Plus calls for full transparency in the land restitution process, stricter oversight by authorities on all levels, and further investigations into similar cases to promote sustainable development and justice.

The Freedom Front Plus will not stand by while taxpayers foot the bill for political interference and administrative mismanagement. This court ruling is a wake-up call for greater accountability and ethical management of public funds.
