The proposed renaming of Ben Friedman Square in Strand to the “Strand Muslim Community Square” has sparked public outcry.
During the public participation process, 74 residents attended the meeting and 54 formally lodged objections against the proposal.
The motivation behind the name change is to recognise the Muslim community’s role in the history of Strand.
The individuals who submitted the proposal indicated, however, that the current name is not offensive.
In the eyes of the local community and his family, Ben Friedman, who made a significant contribution to the economic development of Strand since 1903, is a pioneer.
The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) wishes to emphasise that public spaces should remain inclusive and neutral to unite all residents – regardless of religious conviction.
Using tax money for symbolic name changes – particularly when local communities are opposed to it – is irresponsible.
The party implores the City of Cape Town to seriously consider residents’ input, while also focusing more on the pressing service delivery issues affecting all Cape Town residents.
