Cable thieves target Birchleigh in Kempton Park

Cable thieves struck again in Birchleigh last night (30 June), stealing power cables in Limba Avenue.

This is not an isolated incident, but a growing trend contributing to the collapse of infrastructure caused by neglect, incompetence and a lack of political will to maintain operational standards.

The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) has repeatedly demanded that the Ekurhuleni Metro repair broken streetlights, which make areas such as Birchleigh easy targets for criminals.

The ANC/EFF coalition government of the Ekurhuleni Metro simply ignores the party’s calls for action.

Ekurhuleni’s failure to maintain basic infrastructure has turned neighbourhoods into hunting grounds for criminal syndicates, while law-abiding residents bear the consequences of living without power, water and in constant danger for days or even weeks on end.

Today also marks the day the Metro is supposed to officially scrap the controversial cable theft surcharge of R1 745,00.

Until yesterday, residents whose cables were stolen had to pay this amount to the Metro as a deposit for repairs. The Freedom Front Plus objected to this, leading to the Metro’s decision to abolish the surcharge.

Ekurhuleni’s residents deserve better than a government that refuses to accept accountability.

The Freedom Front Plus once again implores the Ekurhuleni Metro to employ local security companies to guard infrastructure.
