The minister of Finance, Mr. Pravin Gordhan, has revealed that the SAA has in the past number of years paid R22,766 million for severance packages and resignations of chief executive and chief financial officers. He was responding to a parliamentary question of Dr. Pieter Groenewald (MP) of the Freedom Front Plus. Since 2009, the SAA has had eight CEO’s and since 2006 six CFO’s.
“If the number of CEO’s and CFO’s that the SAA has had since 2009, it is little wonder that SAA cannot succeed and has cost the taxpayer dearly. It is clear that the top management of the SAA in this period has not been and is not capable of meeting the challenging requirements of the aviation industry. That the amount of R22,766 million was paid for severance packages alone over this period, and the current CFO is an interim appointment at R322 620-00 monthly, is nothing other than contempt for taxpayers. The minister of finance expects taxpayers to tighten their belts, but at the SAA taxpayers’ money is wasted and that is why the FF Plus demands concerted action to appoint competent people immediately,” Dr. Pieter Groenewald, the FF Plus’ chief spokesperson on Public Enterprises says.
“To have to pay R322 620-00 monthly since December 2015 to the company Sizwe Ntsalaba Goboda, for a CFO, is unacceptable and the FF Plus wants to know from the minister why a permanent appointment has not been made to date. By the end of July, the position of CFO would have cost taxpayers R2,581 million for eight months service. This amounts to an annual salary of R3,87 million,” Dr. Groenewald said.
