Bailiff seizes all Emfuleni’s vehicles

Today, Eskom seized, for the fourth time since 2015, all the vehicles of the Emfuleni Local Municipality (Evaton, Sebokeng, Vaal Oewer, Vanderbijlpark, Vereeniging).

The step is in execution of an attachment order granted by the Gauteng High Court in October this year authorising Eskom to seize Emfuleni's movable assets as well as a bank account for the R1,3 billion that the Municipality owes the power utility.

This debt is only a portion of the Municipality's total outstanding debt to Eskom, which amounts to more than R5 billion.

Eskom has already seized the bank account. The power utility is the second large supplier that approached the High Court. One week later, Rand Water's attachment order was also granted by the High Court.

Today, the bailiff seized 25 vehicles, including those of the construction, traffic, parks, sports and power departments.

The seizure of vehicles has a severely detrimental impact on Emfuleni's service delivery.

Even the intervention by the Gauteng Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) did not improve the situation.

Emfuleni deserves better than the ANC.
