The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) welcomes last week’s arrest of the Norwood police station commander, Col. Logan Govender.
It sends a loud and clear message that the police are not above the law.
The charges against Govender include fraud, theft and the obstruction of justice.
It springs from an alleged false police operation during which cigarettes to the value of R165 000 were confiscated. After the so-called operation, the cigarettes reportedly “vanished”.
It is ironic that Govender was apprehended while attending a meeting on crime prevention in Soweto.
The charges are a blemish on the police’s name as they are supposed to uphold law and order.
The Freedom Front Plus is calling on the public and honest police members to report such criminal activities and not keep silent due to a fear of backlash.
