After the recent extraordinarily heavy rainfall in the Polokwane Local Municipality (Pietersburg), infrastructure and roads, in particular, have become severely damaged due to the ANC-controlled Municipality's failure to perform preventative, routine maintenance.
Cleaning out the stormwater system every now and then is not the answer.
The system must be continually monitored to remove blockages so it can divert flood water.
With the recent rains, homes in the South Gateway residential area were flooded and residents suffered great damage.
The residential area was developed next to the N1 without a proper stormwater system in place.
The FF Plus, which serves on the Portfolio Committee on Roads and Stormwater, frequently warned during meetings that a report indicating how and when the stormwater system is maintained must be submitted along with the relevant planning.
The party also insisted that a proper stormwater system must be installed in the South Gateway residential area before further development takes place.
Unfortunately, these requests fell on deaf ears and now Polokwane residents are left holding the bag and will have to pay for the damage, which could have been prevented, themselves.
It is a shining example of the ANC's poor governance of the Municipality.
The ANC-controlled Municipality has no will nor commitment to improving service delivery for residents' benefit.
Polokwane deserves better than the ANC.
