ANC in Mpumalanga condones unethical behaviour by rejecting motion for lifestyle audits

This morning, the ANC government in Mpumalanga once again rejected the FF Plus’s request to conduct lifestyle audits on all provincial and municipal public officials in the local Legislature.

The motion follows an allegation that the Mayor of the Nkomazi Local Municipality (Komatipoort, Malalane, Marloth Park), Ms Phindile Magagula, is reportedly benefiting from an illegal electricity connection at one of her properties in the Aniva neighbourhood.

This breaks the promises made by the Premier, Ms Refilwe Mtsweni-Tsipane, who previously undertook to conduct these audits and other investigations into officials and politicians in the province as part of a focused attempt to root out corruption.

One opposition party has reportedly already lodged two criminal complaints against Ms Magagula.

Things have certainly taken an ugly turn when the residents of the Municipality have to make do without electricity while their Mayor is apparently condoning illegal activities. The Mayor is supposed to lead from the front when it comes to curbing illegal connections.

This incident highlights the need for implementing the FF Plus’s proposal that lifestyle audits ought to be conducted on all provincial and municipal public figures.

It should form part of a renewed effort to eradicate corruption.

Such audits will uncover any irregularities and keep the various municipalities from sinking even deeper into financial chaos.

The executives of municipalities should be audited first and foremost.

In this way, those who are responsible for the utter decay of municipalities can be brought to book.

Mpumalanga residents should punish the ANC at the polls in the upcoming elections.

Mpumalanga deserves better than the ANC.
