Today, the FF Plus in Gauteng warned the ANC in the province that it must not play political games with the struggling Emfuleni Municipality (Evaton, Sebokeng, Vaal Oewer, Vanderbijlpark, Vereeniging).
This follows after the ANC in Gauteng announced that the mayor of Emfuleni, Mr Jacob Khawe, has resumed his position after talks between the ANC on provincial level and Khawe, which lead to Khawe withdrawing his resignation. According to the ANC, Khawe is the best person for the job of saving the struggling Emfuleni from going under. According to an ANC source, the municipality is apparently also not under semi-administration anymore.
The FF Plus in Gauteng is concerned about the way in which the ANC dealt with the matter over the past week. The ANC must apologise to tax payers in Emfuleni for the inconvenience the municipality had to suffer due to an internal ANC issue.
The events of the past week serve as proof of the fact that the Gauteng local government does not have the political will to place Emfuleni under administration to address the municipality’s financial problems.
The FF Plus is of the opinion that Emfuleni’s financial problems can only be addressed if the Gauteng government intervenes and that time is fast running out to save Emfuleni from going under.
The FF Plus hopes that there is indeed a plan in place to solve Emfuleni’s problems so that Mr Khawe can table it soon. If that is not the case, then Mr Khawe must do the honourable thing and ask the provincial government to step in.
