Due to the ANC coalition government’s lack of planning and administrative discipline, its fuel supply contract lapsed on 30 April and a new service provider was not appointed in time.
This dereliction of duty has paralysed the Metro and already resulted in service disruptions.
Municipal vehicles are unable to refuel, which directly compromises daily service delivery and emergency response.
This debacle is not an isolated incident, but a symptom of systemic maladministration under the ANC coalition government.
A critical contract cannot be allowed to lapse without any future plans in place.
Resorting to emergency measures and deviation processes at this late stage demonstrates that the Metro’s approach is reactive rather than proactive.
And the consequences are dire. In light of the South African Weather Service’s warnings of heavy rain, strong winds and possible flooding, it is critically important that all emergency and disaster management services are fully operational. The uncertainty regarding fuel supply needlessly endangers residents, particularly vulnerable ones and those in areas prone to flooding.
Basic administrative processes, such as contract management, are predictable and should have been finalised months in advance.
Its lack of internal controls and accountability has left the Metro unprepared at a time when planning and reliable service delivery could spell the difference between life and death.
The Metro urgently needs a centralised contract management system with clear timelines, monitoring and accountability. Critical contracts should be reviewed and renewed well before their expiry dates to prevent service disruptions and to ensure that essential services, such as fuel for emergency vehicles, are never compromised.
This debacle shows that the ANC coalition government’s mismanagement not only results in administrative errors, but also seriously jeopardises residents’ wellbeing and safety.
Residents should register and vote for the Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) on 4 November for better service delivery.
