An example must be made of the ANC MP that was arrested for stock theft

Mapule Veronica Mafolo, an ANC Member of Parliament from the North-West province, was arrested on Friday by the Vryburg Stock Theft Unit at the town’s auction grounds. She and two co-accused were arrested for the alleged theft of two calves that they presumably wanted to sell at the auction.

Once again, the ANC sets a bad example of criminality, transgressions and poor leadership for the entire country, says Michal Groenewald, leader of the FF Plus in the North-West province.

According to Groenewald, it is absolutely disgraceful that someone who is a member of one of the highest power structures in the country as well as a prominent member of the ruling party could possibly be guilty of something as serious as stock theft.

Mafolo and her co-accused appeared in the Schweizer-Reneke Magistrate’s Court on Monday. Mafolo was released with a warning while the two men were each released on R800 bail.

“Releasing her with only a warning is not a good start. The judiciary may in no way differentiate between Mafolo and her co-accused by giving her preferential treatment just because she is a MP. For this very reason, more severe action should actually be taken against her.

“The judiciary and the ANC must make an example of Mafolo by taking the severest possible action against her. They must send a clear message that criminality will not be tolerated.

“Stock theft is a very serious crime and a big problem in South Africa that must be combatted on all fronts. It is unthinkable that someone who is supposed to set an example could possibly be guilty of this.

“The FF Plus will keep a keen eye on the case when the accused appear before the court again on the 15th of February,” says Groenewald.
