Tonight’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) is most probably the most important one that President Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver during his tenure. His message will be pivotal for South Africa’s immediate future and thereafter.
It needs to provide guidance as regards the positioning and vision of the Government of National Unity (GNU).
This raises the question of who will be delivering the SONA: The President of our country or of the ANC?
If President Ramaphosa shows up in his capacity as President of the ANC who tries to sit on all the chairs put out by his party and its various groupings, such as the SACP, Cosatu, the Women’s League, the Youth League and others who share the same objective of the National Democratic Revolution (NDR), the road ahead will lead to disaster.
If he shows up as the President and leader of the GNU and all South Africans, and demonstrates the courage to take a strong stance on matters that will benefit everyone in South Africa, it could unlock the benefits of the GNU.
This includes concrete steps and policy moves to facilitate economic growth and job creation, targeted crime fighting and decisive action against corruption.
The FF Plus trusts that the President who shows up to deliver the SONA tonight will be the latter who will put the country’s interests above the ANC’s.
