President is opposed to secret ballot

President Jacob Zuma is opposed to a vote by secret ballot. It became evident this afternoon when the FF Plus asked if he would support a vote by secret ballot in the light of the Constitutional Court’s judgment on the matter earlier today, says dr. Corné Mulder, chief whip of the FF Plus.

The court found, amongst other things, that the speaker indeed has the authority to decide whether the secret ballot will be allowed or not.

In response to the question of whether he will support a secret ballot, the president said that he thinks that parliament must do what it has done in the past, that is, have open ballots where every member’s vote is made known.

According to dr. Mulder, president Zuma clearly does not trust his party’s caucus to cast a vote concerning him if he can’t go and check each member’s vote afterwards.
