Minister must suspend McBride at once

The Minister of Police, Fikile Mbalula, must take immediate action against Mr Robert McBride, the head of IPID, and suspend him pending the investigation of him allegedly assaulting his daughter, says Dr Pieter Groenewald.

According to Dr Groenewald, the fact that the court granted McBride bail at R10 000 is an indication that it is a very serious case, because the amount is high for an assault case.

“McBride finds himself in a position where he has various resources at his disposal and it would be easy to intimidate or exert undue influence on the investigative officers in the case. For that reason, he must be suspended right away until the case has been finalised.

“McBride was very quick to request that the former acting National Police Commissioner, lieutenant general Khomotso Phahlane, be suspended until the case against him was finalised. Double standards cannot be tolerated and the Minister must therefore suspend McBride at once,” says Dr Groenewald.
