FF Plus submits proposals to ensure responsible decision making regarding tariff hikes

The FF Plus in the Modimolle-Mookgophong Local Municipality (Nylstroom, Naboomspruit, Roedtan, Alma, Vaalwater) tabled several proposals to the Municipality’s Executive Council to address the issue of exorbitant tariff hikes.

The Executive Committee’s decision-making during its meeting on Wednesday (22 May 2024) reflects the seriousness with which these important matters are approached. The FF Plus serves as a member of this Committee.

It would be very irresponsible to implement tariff hikes without first doing thorough research and an analysis of the Municipality’s current economic position.

So, after a careful analysis and much deliberation on tariff adjustments, the FF Plus caucus submitted the following proposals to the Executive Committee

  1. 1. That agricultural land tax should be reduced by 13% after it was increased by 47% last year due to an administrative error by the Municipality.
  2. 2. That the discount of 30% on land tax for municipal services which form part of the tariff, but are not delivered remains unchanged and that the discount remains in place.
  3. 3. That the wording of the Municipality’s policy on agricultural tariffs is adjusted to be in line with the provisions of the Municipal Financial Management Act (MFMA) and that a tax rate may be levied on agricultural land up to a maximum of 25% of the residential rate, with the possibility of lowering it to 20% or even 15%.

During yesterday’s council meeting (Thursday, 30 May), all three proposals were adopted as is.

The proposal that tariffs for basic services (such was water, sewage, assessment rates and refuse removal) should be increased by 4,9% was also adopted. The FF Plus proposed that a 0% tariff increase should be implemented, but the Council was not in support of it.

The party is of the opinion that the Municipality should focus on widening its revenue catchment by 5%, rather than expecting a small percentage of taxpayers to pay 5% more.

The FF Plus does realise that the Municipality is still growing and that operating costs keep rising.

The FF Plus will not hesitate to use its influence in the Executive Council for taxpayers’ benefit.
