The FF Plus lodged a complaint with the Human Rights Commission (HRC) against the Mopani District Municipality (MDM) after it had promised that the Kampersrus water supply project would be finalised by June. It, however, fell through.
Work on a bulk sewage treatment plant and water supply project, the Kampersrus Water Supply and Sewerage Scheme, commenced in 2010.
In reports dating from 2017 the project is indicated as 98% complete, needing only the correct size transformer.
During a community meeting in May this year, the Mayor of the Maruleng Local Municipality, Mr Tsheko Calais Musolwa, and Mr Paradise Shilowa, director of Water Services at the MDM, informed residents that the transformer would be installed by June.
On 23 August, another community meeting was called where representatives of the District Municipality were conspicuous by their absence and the Mayor of the Maruleng Local Municipality was unable to provide any answers.
Meanwhile, the Kampersrus community has been without water for days.
The party requested the HRC to ensure that the project is completed so that the communities of Kampersrus and Schocia can have their basic right to water, as well as a working sewage treatment plant.
The Mopani District Municipality must be held accountable for violating residents’ basic right to adequate water supply and to live in a clean environment.
The FF Plus will continue to apply pressure and act in the best interests of residents.
