The FF Plus did not support the approval of a salary increase for councillors of the Johannesburg Metro Council.
This increase should be viewed in light of Johannesburg’s financial predicament and is ill-considered.
Although the salary increase for councillors will not impact the Council’s finances on the whole, it does send a negative message to residents.
Besides, the Metro spent only 74% of its capital budget during the 2023/24 financial year.
The enormous backlog in capital projects, particularly those relating to Johannesburg Water and City Power that amount to billions, is also a serious cause for concern.
In addition, Johannesburg is plagued by water shortages caused by crumbling infrastructure as 40% of the city’s water is lost due to water leakages. Illegal water connections also exacerbate the problem.
The FF Plus will not stand idly by and look on as Johannesburg decays and service delivery keeps deteriorating while office-bearers line their pockets.
