The FF Plus can no longer stand idly by while the Ekurhuleni Metro squanders money on exorbitant feasibility and environmental impact assessments, leaving no funds to complete the actual projects.
In the case of the Halalisa Tertiary Road project, which aims to create an effective storm water system, a whopping R2 052 625, or 40% of the initial budget of R5 186 920, has already been spent on feasibility and environmental impact assessments while no progress has been made with the actual work.
It appears that conducting these assessments has simply become a way of milking the public for money, at the expense of the projects.
Moreover, an amount of R1 956 875 was erroneously indicated in a recent report that was tabled to the Metro’s Oversight Committee on Transport, Roads and Storm Water as having been redistributed to smaller projects in Germiston.
The actual balance for the Halalisa Tertiary Road project ought to be R3 128 295.
This erroneous allocation points to possible financial mismanagement, and underlines the need for the Metro’s Public Accounts Committee (MPAC) to conduct a thorough investigation to determine how this error occurred and prevent similar errors in the future.
The FF Plus demands that the MPAC thoroughly investigates the matter and enforces accountability.
to make sure that taxpayers’ money is used responsibly and effectively, and that the promised infrastructure projects, as planned and budgeted for in the Integrated Development Plan (IDP), are completed.
