It is unacceptable that ANC and EFF councillors are failing to attend the meetings of the Tshwane Metro Council’s Utilities Committee tasked with overseeing electricity, water and sanitation.
The functioning of this important Committee is thus disrupted due to a lack of a quorum, and it can only be labelled as political sabotage.
Section 79 portfolio committees oversee the day-to-day functioning of the Tshwane Metro. The Utilities Committee is one of the most important committees that oversee regional operations and ensure coordination between the Departments of Energy and Electricity, and Water and Sanitation.
All these departments report to the Utilities Committee. It is, therefore, of the utmost importance that this Committee meets regularly to keep an eye on key functions.
Without proper oversight, there is no transparency and mismanagement, poor service delivery and corruption will remain insurmountable problems.
So, it is an absolute disgrace that a handful of irresponsible councillors of the ANC and EFF are undermining the Tshwane Metro’s political oversight by simply failing to perform their duty of attending committee meetings.
The FF Plus is calling on councillors to take their jobs as public office-bearers and public servants seriously.
If the ANC and EFF councillors persist in their contemptuous conduct, the FF Plus will lodge complaints with the Utilities Committee’s chairperson so that appropriate steps can be taken against the sabotage of the Committee.
