Lourens Benade has lived in Brits since 1997, bringing decades of business and systems experience to local government. He obtained a BCom degree at the University of the Free State and a BCom Honours degree at the University of Johannesburg. After a career at several South African companies, he retired in 2021 but immediately continued as a contract SAP consultant. Municipal decline motivated him to become involved recently. Lourens is analytical, experienced and systematic, with an understanding of financial processes, management information and the need for responsible renewal.
“Madibeng can’t solve crises with paper profit; the municipality must know how much cash is available after obligations have been taken into account. I want to see a daily cash position, a rolling thirteen-week forecast and monthly management dashboard that correctly integrates collection, creditors, bulk services and ring-fenced funds. Experience with enterprise and SAP systems taught me that management is only as good as the data and controls on which it rests. Unfunded expenditure must stop, current strategic accounts must receive priority and savings must flow back to essential maintenance.”
