President Jacob Zuma’s appointment of the commission to investigate the national commissioner Gen. Riah Phiyega’s suitability is welcomed. It could rightfully be asked why the president had taken so long and points to poor administration in his office.
Gen. Phiyega must be suspended as she has already shown that she does not hesitate to interfere with investigations. Her influencing of the provincial commissioners to declare their support and loyalty to her in the media, is just one such example. The fact that she was also prepared to give R3 million to the head of the Hawks in KwaZulu-Natal, Maj-Gen. Johan Booysen to leave the service, is further proof.
“The commission should complete its work as quickly as possible so that a final decision about Phiyega could be made. The uncertainty of whether she is going to stay is creating uncertainty amongst Police management and is bad for the morale of the Police Service,” Dr. Pieter Groenewald, chief spokesperson on Police for the Freedom Front Plus says.
