The water restrictions that had been imposed on Robertson in the Langeberg Local Municipality (Ashton, Bonnievale, McGregor, Montagu, Robertson) since 1 February 2025 were unnecessary and were lifted at the end of last month after the Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) insisted.

They unanimously found that there is enough water available, that there is no need for water restrictions and that any water shortages were caused by the Municipality’s negligence.
On top of that, residents were threatened with fines should they exceed the water consumption restrictions and other measures. The entire situation caused widespread dissatisfaction among residents and was basically a repetition of the January 2022 water crisis.
What has become clearly evident is that no lesson was learnt from the previous crisis and no precautionary measures have been implemented to avoid a similar situation.
Although the Freedom Front Plus concurs that water is a scarce commodity and should be used sparingly, residents should not be punished for the laxity of the Municipality, which is failing to properly maintain its water infrastructure and resources.
Some of the other decisions taken by the Council in response to the Freedom Front Plus’s independent investigation are:
• An independent company should conduct an investigation and make recommendations regarding the water infrastructure and other maintenance issues.
• The Dassieshoek Dam’s wall should be raised to improve water catchment.
• The Municipality has also undertaken to remove the silt from the dam so as to make it deeper.
The Freedom Front Plus in Langeberg always puts the interests of residents first and will not allow them to be kept in the dark about the actual state of affairs.
