The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) warns residents of the Emfuleni Local Municipality (Evaton, Sebokeng, Vaal Oewer, Vanderbijlpark, Vereeniging) to avoid the practice of illegal electricity connections.
A contractor employee was recently arrested as he had allegedly made an illegal electricity connection.
The suspect from Zimbabwe, however, appeared in court charged only with illegal immigration and not illegal electricity connection.
The Freedom Front Plus urges contractors to ensure that their workers undergo a proper vetting process before commencing employment.
Illegal immigrants, as in this case, should not be allowed to work for contractors appointed by the Municipality.
This is not the first illegal electricity connection in Emfuleni. The Metro is currently investigating four service providers that were responsible for switching electricity on and off. They have been temporarily suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.
Illegal connections undermine service delivery in Emfuleni and hinder revenue collection, which is essential for infrastructure maintenance.
The Municipality should take decisive action against contractors whose workers engage in the practice of illegal connections and terminate their contracts immediately.
The party advocates strict law enforcement and encourages residents to pay their utility bills promptly to avoid disconnection due to non-payment.
