Tshwane’s contempt for petitions undermines service delivery and ratepayers

Officials from various departments of the Tshwane Metro’s contempt for residents’ petitions regarding service delivery problems is a slap in the face of residents who faithfully meet their financial obligations, but have to endure deteriorating infrastructure and poor service delivery on a daily basis.

Residents have no choice but to submit petition after petition for the restoration of basic services such as broken street lights, potholes and old, crumbling water and electricity infrastructure.

When these petitions are simply ignored, it further erodes the trust between the Metro and its residents.

The Petitions Committee is supposed to function as the official channel through which residents can make their voices heard. However, when councillors and officials fail to attend the meetings, this important instrument becomes useless.

The same problems appear on the agenda month after month, without any real solutions being implemented.

The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) will no longer stand for this lack of accountability. The Metro Council should take stringent action against officials and councillors who miss Petitions Committee meetings, as attending these meetings is part of their duties.

The capital’s ratepayers deserve better. They deserve a competent, transparent and accountable metro.

The Freedom Front Plus will keep the pressure on until residents’ petitions are taken seriously and their complaints are no longer ignored.
