After six years of constant pressure from the FF Plus in Limpopo, President Cyril Ramaphosa has signed a proclamation that authorises the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to investigate allegations of corruption and maladministration at the Mogalakwena Local Municipality (Mokopane / Potgietersrus) and to recover any losses suffered by the Municipality.
The proclamation authorises the SIU to investigate the following:
• Serious maladministration;
• Inappropriate or unlawful conduct by officials of the Municipality;
• Unlawful allocation of public funds or assets;
• Unlawful, irregular or unauthorised procurement procedures, transactions or practices relating to state property;
• Intentional or negligent loss of public funds or damage to public assets;
• Offences as described in the Prevention and Combating of Corrupt Activities Act (2004);
• Any other unlawful conduct with regard to the Municipality.
The FF Plus considers the SIU's investigation into the operations of the Mogalakwena Municipality a step in the right direction.
The Municipality has for years been plagued by poor service delivery as well as the wasting and misappropriation of public funds.
The FF Plus will closely follow the investigation and will ensure that the appropriate steps, including laying criminal charges, are taken against the current and former municipal officials who are guilty of corruption and maladministration.
