It is shocking that the motion that the FF Plus proposed regarding the murder of a farmer, Mr Schalk van der Merwe, was rejected in the National Council of Provinces earlier today, while other motions that condemned murders were accepted, also by the FF Plus.
In its motion, the FF Plus referred to the incident in which Mr Van der Merwe was attacked and murdered on Sunday the 24th of November near Wolmaransstad in the North West province. His wife, Lettie, was seriously injured.
The FF Plus requested in its motion that the Minister of Police and all the MECs for Public Safety in all the provinces must take note of the murder and must prioritise crime prevention so as to ensure the safety of all South Africans.
The ANC and the EFF unanimously rejected the motion with interjections such as: “We want the land.”
The FF Plus responded by saying that by not accepting the motion, the members of the National Council of Provinces is sending a loud and clear message to the public that murder and the high crime rate in the country are acceptable.
The FF Plus finds it shocking and unacceptable that the murder of a farmer elicits no sympathy from the ANC and the EFF.
Thousands of farmers have been murdered over the last 25 years under ANC rule in South Africa. The fact that Members of Parliament seemingly do not condemn the murder of a farmer sends out an ominous message and now President Cyril Ramaphosa will have to say whether he condones this kind of attitude.
