SANRAL admits that its instruments still do not comply with legal standards

More than three years after the FF Plus took on SANRAL for the first time regarding its e-toll measuring instruments that are not certified as required by law (Legal Metrology Act 9 of 2014), nothing has been done about it.

Yesterday during the parliamentary Portfolio Committee for Trade and Industry's meeting, a representative of the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS) responded to a question and confirmed to the FF Plus that there exists no standards for the e-toll system because the standards still need to be developed.

The response is shocking seeing as it means that the e-toll system is technically speaking not accountable in terms of the Legal Metrology Act.

What is even worse is the fact that the response to this question in Parliament remains the same year after year and apparently, SANRAL has no regard for the prescriptions of the law and yet ordinary citizens are expected to abide by the law.

The FF Plus considers SANRAL's lack of action to be deliberate and malicious contempt of the law.

SANRAL simply cannot issue accounts that are calculated in an illegal manner and on top of that, these accounts issued by SANRAL cannot be considered as correct and neither can they be used as evidence in court.

The time has come to do away with the e-toll system once and for all.
